Why is My Air Conditioner Not Blowing Cold Air?

As with all products that use mechanical components, it’s highly likely that something with fail eventually. In some cases, this can cause a slow decline in cooling performance. In others, this can cause a sudden halt in performance and operation completely.

In either case, there are basic steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue quickly. Here’s what you can do when your central AC isn’t cooling properly.

Adjust the Fan Setting

Check the thermostat and make sure the ‘auto’ setting is enabled. If your setting has been switched to “on”, the system will blow air continuously regardless of whether or not it’s being cooled. If ‘auto’ has been enabled, check the temperature setting to see if it’s at least 5° below current room temperature.

Inspect the Air Filter

If the filter hasn’t been changed in a while, chances are it’s clogged. A clogged filter can cause a chain reaction of events that start with a frozen exterior unit and can lead to significant malfunctions and breakdowns. It’s important to inspect and replace filters as part of your routine and preventative maintenance.

Check Outside Unit

Complete a visual inspection of the outside unit. This should be dust, dirt, and debris-free. Branches or bushes that are encroaching on the unit should be trimmed to allow for air flow. Can you see/hear the outside fan working? If not, it’s time to call a professional.

Check Electrical Supply and Service Switches

These can be found in 3 general areas. Start with the fuses and circuit breakers in your electrical panel. If that to be problem-free, move on to check the service switch inside the unit. This is generally found near the furnace. If that area seems to be performing properly, check the electricity supply near the compressor located in the outside unit.

When is it Time to Call a Professional for Air Conditioning Repairs?

If the steps that you take to troubleshoot your air conditioner not blowing cold air or not blowing air at all, it’s time to call a professional. Central air conditioning systems can involve complex components and mechanics that require the attention of a trained professional. Otherwise, you could be risking even more damage to the system with continued operation or physical injuries by attempting amateur repairs.
